Study sheds more light on iron’s influence on memory
A recent study involving iron-deficient women with diminished memory found that iron supplementation did more than just bring up their iron levels. Improved iron levels also correlated with better memory and mental-functioning skills on specialized tests.
The study, which appeared in the March 2007 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, involved 113 women ages 18 to 38. Based on blood tests, the women were classified as having sufficient iron, deficient without anemia, or iron deficiency severe enough to be considered mild anemia. Baseline tests of memory, learning and attention were given. Compared with women with sufficient iron, the women with low iron – ranging from moderately low levels to levels low enough to cause anemia – scored more poorly and completed the tests more slowly. Those with anemia had the worst score.
Study participants were randomly assigned to take either inactive pills (placebos) or iron supplements for the next 16 weeks, after which they were tested again for iron levels and mental functioning. Those who were iron deficient or iron deficient with mild anemia and took iron supplements improved their mental skills test scores. In fact, test performance improved fivefold to sevenfold among women who had a significant increase in there iron test levels. Researchers say their findings call into question the traditional viewpoint that it takes full blown anemia before mental-functioning skills are impaired.
Mayo Clinic experts say further studies are needed to determine if these findings extend to other population groups, such as men and older adults. In the mean time , they say it seems reasonable to ask your doctor to consider measuring your iron levels if you’re concerned about memory issues – but talk with your doctor before deciding to take iron supplements.
Anxiety: Imagine What Your Life Would Be Like Without
It
Do you remember how it felt when you were a small child,
walking through life without a care in the world? Your biggest worry was what
to bring for show-and-tell, and you became giddy over things like candy and
cartoons. Things seemed so simple, because you did not have all of that nervous
energy that has built up over the years. And, it seemed just about perfect.
As adults, we have so many more responsibilities and pressures that sometimes
seem overwhelming. But it is our reaction to these situations and elements of
our lives that can make or break us. There is no need to walk around a bundle
of nerves every day of your life, because some things can easily be worked out.
Without worry, you will be in much better health, and your appearance will
certainly improve tenfold. Excessive worry causes premature wrinkling, can lead
to early graying of the hair, and can have adverse effects on the skin.
Additionally, you are causing unnecessary damage to your heart and other vital
organs. Worrying releases adrenaline and other chemicals to the brain, leading
to severe emotional responses from the nervous system.
Your life would be so much more pleasant without putting that undue stress on
the body and mind. Sometimes anxiety is hard to avoid, but you can learn to
control your reaction to it. Then just
imagine that inner peace that you will feel once you begin to slowly let go of
all of those things that plague you on a regular basis. Your tummy will slowly
let go of all of those knots, and your forehead will no longer crinkle up. You
can be free of all of that anxiety by simply letting go one step at a time.
A life without anxiety means taking back the control over various aspects of
your life. It is about not giving in to those worrisome thoughts and feelings
that pervade your mind. It is about learning to not sweat the tiny details of
every little thing. It is about identifying what causes your anxiety and concentrating
on dealing with the things that you can change.
Learn to relax and take time each day to do something you enjoy, such as
pleasure reading, gardening, play with your pet, talk to a friend you haven’t
seen in awhile. Living without anxiety involves a great balance of everything,
learning to take the good with the bad.
It is possible to be that little kid again, while maintaining the maturity of
adulthood. For example, your life does not have to always be work. Accomplish
some vital tasks throughout the day, then treat yourself to some ice cream or
other indulgence you may not have had in awhile. Anxiety takes over sometimes
as a form of punishment to ourselves, but we have to remember not to miss out
on so many of life’s little pleasures and treasures.
While life is certainly not all rainbows and kittens, we can certainly try our
hardest to alleviate some of that pressure in order to lead healthy and
fulfilling lives. If we are tense and wound up, this cuts into the fun side of
our personality, until we find that we have missed out on so much. So unclench
those fists, put up your feet, and start the process toward living without
anxiety.
